Our Mission

The mission of the Task Force is to advocate with and to represent the dignity and rights of people who are homeless in our society, toward the goal of preventing homelessness and seeking appropriate and affordable housing for all.

Our  History

Founded in 1981, the Metro Atlanta Task Force for the Homeless has consistently served as the central coordinating agency for services to individuals who are homeless.  For the past 23 years we have served several hundred thousand individuals.  Our programs help link people to services that include but are not limited to: shelter, permanent housing , transportation, employment and health care. The Task Force pursues progressive, enduring social change while respecting the urgent needs of homeless persons needing immediate and emergency assistance toward the goal of “no person left outside.”

In November of 1996 our current facility, located on the corner of Peachtree and Pine Streets, was purchased by a generous donor and immediately deeded over to the Task Force.  This 95,000 sq. ft. facility is the largest shelter space in the southeastern United States, providing shelter and   services to an average of  500-700 men, women, and children on a daily basis.  No one who needs shelter is turned away.

peachtreeBeing on Atlanta’s premier street, at the border between the downtown and midtown business districts, Peachtree-Pine is both a blessing and a challenge for the Task Force.  Because the building is centrally located and easily accessible by mass transit, the location makes it easy for those who need our services to reach us.

The vision for our building is to create a sustainable, inclusive community within a  green building, including homeless, formerly homeless, never-been homeless people living, working, playing, and learning together. With the purchase of our building, the Task Force evolved from an advocacy and referral agency to providing direct service as well.

The Task Force is a member of the National Coalition for the Homeless .
